Just a corn stick or two

Just a corn stick or two

If you have ever spent any time in Wilson, you know tobacco or barbeque. Or both. Tobacco has faded, but not barbeque. So begins the evening of Thursday, March 12. A GOP crowd gathered at Wilson Community College, where a faint aroma emanated from the back room. Wilson GOP Chair Gary Proffitt announced a brief delay and an audible groan went up from those assembled. Not ten minutes later, the doors were opened, and one lone server from Parker’s Barbeque served up every dinner plate. Slaw, chopped pork, fried chicken, boiled potatoes, brunswick stew, sweet tea. An eastern NC feast. Plopped on top? Two golden corn sticks. Congratulations to the 2015 team, led by Gary Proffitt, as 2016 planning gets underway. Special guest in attendance was new Speaker of the House Tim Moore with an update of the 2015 legislative session. As the tables were cleaned, I saw a few leftover cornsticks; not everyone is a fan. But they tasted good to me.
